My name is Jackie Girgis, I was born and raised in Egypt. I moved to the States when I was 15 years old. I've always wanted to be a teacher or a translator, I started at a community college then went to DePaul University but I was studying different majors thinking that I should explore before finally deciding on becoming a teacher. My husband, Peter, and I are from Egypt, we have two kids. My son, Antonios who is 2 1/2 years old and my daughter, Demyana, who turned 1 in August are the love of my life, and also my motivators to finish school and show them that all things are possible. I used to work at The Sports Authority as an operation manager, but I left it because I need to focus more on my children and my education. I now work at Seaspar as an Inclusion Aide, in which I assist kids with disabilities in different environment. It's very challenging and rewarding, because we have to get kids out of their comfort zone, but maintain their positive personality.
Growing up in Egypt we did not have much technology in our education, I did not own a computer, simply because it was not part of our regular education curriculum. Computer education was meant for higher grades, due to the high cost of computers.
For me personally I think technology and education are a great components for better and successful students. We have to be one the same page with our students and everyone now is so computerized, but we have to makes sure that we are guiding them toward the good and positive directions for technology.
My goal is to be able to use technology and my background to move kids forward for the better, and also let them know that it's great to have dreams and go after them, as long as your positive and have ambitions to achieve your goals.
Welcome, Jacklen! I enjoyed reading your introduction. It sounds like you have a very interesting background. Your children are still young but the good news is they will be exposed to many different types of technology as they grow.
